| Construction |
The Daylite series is Duracell latest offering in the high output flashlight market. It also has what Duracell calls "Truebeam Optics" which basically is a beam focusing mechanism. This system utilizes a smooth reflector in conjunction with a dome-shaped optical component. This dome, attached to three "legs", moves towards and away from the LED depending on which direction you twist the head. As with the other optic components, the lens is also made of plastic. The head is permanently attached to the battery tube and is not removable. There's a band of fine textured knurling running round the front half of the head. The rear half has scallops machined all around which makes single-handed focusing easy and comfortable.
The exterior of the battery tube has a simple cylindrical design. About a third of the exterior towards the front has the same fine textured knurling as that on the band on the head. It provides adequate grip, but not as secure as other rougher, deeper-cut knurling. Focusing indicators are printed just below the head which shows the user which way to twist in order to get either a wide or narrow beam. The entire light, accept for the tail cap, is finished in Type 2 anodizing with a matte finish. The interior wall of the battery tube has ridges running along its length for some reason. I couldn't figure out the benefit of this design element though. Threads between the battery tube and tail cap fit together really well and smoothly. No grinding or squeaking was encountered during tests. There's a rubber o-ring placed just behind the threads on the tail cap which provides a moisture seal. The tail cap houses a reverse push button which has average tension and travel. It provides a positive tactile feedback and clicking sound. The switch cap sits recessed within the tail cap so tail standing on flat surfaces is possible. There's a small hole machined along the end of the tail cap for lanyard attachments. The tail cap is finished in gold which gives the light that trademark Duracell look.

The beam profile produced by the Daylite can be varied by means of its "Truebeam Optics" system. Simple turn the head clockwise for a wide beam, and anti-clockwise for a narrow beam. The variation between widest and narrowest beam profile is not as profound as that of the Maglite LED for example, but still results in a noticeable difference. The color temperature on my sample is a almost pure white, leaning slightly towards the cool side. The main spot and spill area of the beam profile is relatively free from artifacts, though there is some stray light around the main spill area which project odd shapes. This really isn't an issue because they're only noticeable as very close range within 1m or less, at this distance the main spot would probably be too bright for practical use anyway.
The 2x CR123 of the Daylite maintains very good regulation apart from the slight initial drop. As the battery looses power and no longer able to maintain regulation, the output gradually dims down, thus giving you ample time and warning to replace the batteries.

| Conclusion |
The Good - Maintains regulation very well. Beam produced by the optic system is relatively clean. Simple ambidextrous focusing mechanism.
The Bad - Variation between narrow and wide focus beam profiles doesn't provide a significant difference overall.
The Relative - Beam has a neutral white color temperature leaning slightly towards the cool side. Uses a reverse push button switch. Is able to tail stand. |
